Pequin Pepper Origin Pequin peppers are thought to have originated in the Mexican state of Tobasco. They go by many different names depending on the region. In Veracruz, it goes by chipaya, in Chaipas they refer to it as timpinchile, and maax'ik in the Yucatan. In other countries, it also goes by a few other names such as in Guatemala and El Salvador where it goes by the name chile petin.
What do the peppers look like? Pequin peppers are small peppers with a bright red appearance. They resemble Christmas lights and tend to grow upward from the plant. The inside flesh is orange to white in color.
