Coronavirus Mitigation Efforts

December 2020 USPS Alert:

Starting on December 1st, 2020 we started receiving emails and phone calls from customers stating their tracking numbers were not tracking. Most of the time the tracking only has something like this:

November 30, 2020, 4:50 pm
Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending
SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85260

What this means from the tracking is that this is the time that USPS came to Sonoran Spice on that day and picked up your package. They scanned a shipment manifesto created in Ship Station (one way we ship orders).

You might also see something like this:
December 8, 2020, 3:45 am
Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item
SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85260
A shipping label has been prepared for your item at 3:45 am on December 8, 2020 in SCOTTSDALE, AZ 85260. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date.

What this means is we created your label but when USPS came to the location your information was not on the Ship Station scan form because your order is a USPS Priority Mail shipment which we use Shopify Shipping to ship your order. There are no shipping manifests in Shopify so they did not scan your package at Sonoran Spice. Usually they take these orders to a shipping facility and scan them. Since they are so far behind on orders your order has yet to be scanned by them.

Since we started receiving these reports, we began the normal process of submitting missing mail forms with USPS to try to figure out what was going on. On December 8th, we were finally able to contact a Postal Inspector with USPS. Who explained that due to Black Friday and Cyber Monday all coinciding with new statewide lockdowns nationwide there has been an unprecedented amount of mail entering their systems. This, coupled with the Coronavirus, has severely hampered their ability to deliver mail on-time. On 12/11/20, we spoke to someone else at USPS that confirmed that the Coronavirus has caused numerous facilities to close across the country. If even one person at a facility is confirmed positive they said that entire facility would be closed.

This information is backed up by numerous searches online that expand on these issues facing USPS.

What we have noticed is that after USPS comes to pick up the packages the orders do not track for a number of days. They seem to sit in a facility in Phoenix or somewhere else. The packages, in almost every case, do eventually get scanned again and continue tracking. We have no control over this process.

At this time, considering the current circumstances with USPS we no longer recommend that you select USPS at checkout. We cannot guarantee any date provided by them at checkout. At checkout on www.sonoranspice.com we send the box dimensions and weights to USPS, FedEx and UPS. What you see are the real-time rates with the discounts applied that they provide to us for our high mail volume rates, passed onto you. We have no way to change the delivery dates they return. Those dates are, as of now for USPS are not accurate. So we cannot guarantee you will receive an item by a specific date window they say it will arrive.

We know this is a terrible situation for our customers and we highly suggest you use UPS and FedEx as a shipping service.

Finally tonight (12/11/20), USPS now has an alert on their tracking pages that states the following:

"ALERT: USPS IS EXPERIENCING UNPRECEDENTED PACKAGE INCREASES AND LIMITED EMPLOYEE AVAILABILITY DUE TO THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19. WE APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE AND REMAIN COMMITTED TO DELIVERING THE HOLIDAYS TO YOU."

They should have put this alert out there many days ago. At Sonoran Spice we are doing everything we can to send your packages either the same day you place the order or at least within 2 business days. Please understand these delays from USPS are completely out of our control. We are doing everything we can to get you your packages on-time and that is why we are recommending you avoid USPS as a shipping option at this time.

If you have any questions please send them to us at service@sonoranspice.com.

March 2020 - Current.
To our valued customers,

During this difficult time, the safety and well-being of our customers, employees, and their loved ones is our top priority. We have been closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and feel it’s important to inform you of the steps we’re taking to ensure the health and safety of our employees and customers.

Note: The
U.S. FDA has stated that there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with the transmission of COVID-19.

Here are the actions we are taking:

·       Sonoran Spice closed our physical store and pickup window in Scottsdale, Arizona on February 28th, 2020. Our warehouse is currently only open for deliveries. All employees have been instructed to practice social distancing with delivery drivers and to handle all incoming packages with gloves while wearing masks.

·       We are wiping down all high contact surfaces, railings and doorknobs with industrial strength sanitizer. Following good manufacturing practices, our production area and equipment are always cleaned after each shift.

·       Hand sanitizer has been made available to all employees.

·       When your order is prepared, we are wearing masks and gloves. Since we are dealing with some of the world's hottest peppers, this has always been the case. It would not be possible to package your orders without the use of these Personal Protective Equipment.

·       All employees have been told under no circumstance to come to work sick. As a FDA regulated food facility, this has always been our policy.

·       All employees that package orders are working on separate shifts.

·       When possible, employees are working from home.

·       All employees have been told to practice social distancing and wash their hands regularly.

·       We recently built an in-house testing lab to test our products for pathogens that have been identified by the FDA as areas of concern in general for peppers. We are using FDA approved testing equipment to process these tests.

·       We have a food safety plan in place and have staff that are PCQI certified. (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) This is a FDA recognized standard.

·       As this situation is rapidly changing we will be adapting and enacting any additional safety measures as advised by the CDC and FDA.

We’re in this together, and as the situation evolves, we’ll do our best to continue to serve our customers. We will continue to ship orders and have large inventories available on almost all products. During this time, we will also be rationing some of our high demand spices to ensure there is enough for our regular customers and to help ensure businesses and restaurants can continue operating with minimal disruptions.

Wishing your families all the best.
