Carolina Reaper Peppers 8 Oz

This is the world’s hottest pepper!

On the Scoville Heat Scale, the Carolina Reaper pepper has an average Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating of 1,500,000 with some individual peppers topping out at an incredible 2,200,000 SHU.

The pepper is a crossbreed between a Ghost pepper and a Red Habanero pepper. As such, it has a sweet somewhat smoky flavor. The heat hits you instantly as a rush of endorphins envelop your body. Your skin begins to sweat and the intense pain in your mouth is unbearable. Luckily this pain subsides in about 10 minutes. All the while, you will experience a sense of euphoria that is akin to running a marathon as your body tries to chemically compensate for the pain.

Like all peppers, that contain capsaicin, the feeling of pain is felt because of the pain receptors that mammals have. Birds and insects lack these particular receptors and therefore do not experience the pain. While capsaicin does cause skin to burn and blister, peppers themselves are not harmful if properly ingested.

WARNING:

We highly recommend you use this pepper in very small amounts at first, such as 1/16th of a teaspoon per cup of other ingredients. Only after you feel comfortable with the pain should you experiment with higher amounts. If too much is ingested, consume milk products that contain casein such as sour cream, milk and cheese. The casein in these products work as a detergent to wash away the capsaicin oil found in the peppers.

If the product comes in contact with skin, first wipe clean with a dry cloth, then wash with cold water. If pain persists mix one part bleach with 10 parts water and wipe the affected area, then rinse. Do not use bleach solution on head or eye areas. If product does get in your eyes or on your face, baby shampoo works wonders to alleviate the pain. Just remember to always use a dry cloth as a first step, otherwise you will just be spreading the capsaicin to other areas with the water.

Questions & Answers

Ask a Question
  • Will these physically harm me?

You will feel intense heat, much more than any other type of pepper you have ever consumed. This pain though is neurological and not physical. You and most mammals have pain receptors that are sensitive to the active ingredient in hot peppers which is capsaicin. Birds lack these specific pain receptors, and consume peppers all the time never knowing how hot a pepper really is! Even when you eat a pepper, your mouth may burn intensely but there is no physical damage to your mouth. Give it about 10 minutes and you will be completely back to normal.

  • What if I get this in my eyes?

Don't do that! Ok, if it is too late for that warning. Simply take DRY tissue and wipe the skin around your eyes. Next, take baby shampoo or eye solution and flush your eyes out.  We get it in our eyes all the time even though we are wearing masks. It just happens. Sometimes it is just floating in the air and we walk into it. Trust us, this happens to at least one person every single day at Sonoran Spice. You are going to be just fine.

  • What if I get it on my skin? It burns!

Don't do that either! If it is too late... (DO NOT DO THIS ON YOUR FACE) See what to do if you get it in your eyes if it is on your face.  1. Wipe your skin with a dry cloth first. Try to get as much as possible off your skin with a dry cloth. Water only spreads it.  2. After doing as much as you can with the dry cloth, wash the affected area with soap and water.  3. If it is unbearable, wash the affected area with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water (NOT YOUR FACE). We have no idea why this works, but it does!  4. Wash the bleach off with soap and water.

  • Can I rehydrate these?

Yes, simply submerge them in water and let them soak for 15 minutes. They will rehydrate back to their former glory.

  • Can I grow the seeds inside?

No, the peppers have been oven dried in commercial ovens. The seeds will not germinate. We do sell seeds from fresh peppers. Look under Products > Seeds for Growing in the main menu.
