Native to the country of Trinidad and Tobago in the Southern Caribbean, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper is one of the world's hottest peppers. On February 13, 2013 the New Mexico Chile Pepper Institute named the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper the world's hottest pepper with an average Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) rating of more than 1.2 million on the Scoville Scale.
The Scoville Scale is a measure of the pungency (heat level) of chili peppers.
What does it feel like?
The heat level of the pepper seems somewhat mild at first but then it builds until it is unbearable and crosses 1.2 million Scoville Heat Unit threshold. Some individual fruits are known to top out at a whopping 2 million on the Scoville Scale causing intense pain and a significant endorphin rush.
